New Autobahn A44 – Tunnel Trimberg

MILLING LIMESTONE BLOCKS TO SIZE
Using a KEMROC ES 60 universal cutter where precision is required

Construction of the new A44 autobahn from Kassel to Herleshausen (Germany) is forging ahead. Located along the route of the autobahn, the steep walls of the Trimberg Tunnel portals are supported with shotcrete faced with massive blocks of Jurassic limestone. In total, around 9,000 blocks are required and each one must be milled to size within very tight tolerances. A KEMROC ES 60 HD universal cutter mounted on a wheeled excavator is used for final adjustments to the block dimensions.

Autobahn Junction Saarlouis

DISMANTLING A BRIDGE,
PIECE BY PIECE
Using a large excavator and a KEMROC cutter wheel

Based in southern Germany, demolition experts Max Wild are involved in a spectacular demolition project. The old Saar Bridge at the Saarlouis autobahn junction has been replaced by a new, modern bridge with a higher capacity. The plan for demolishing the older bridge consisted of breaking it down into sections that could be placed on pontoons and floated to a crushing facility on the riverbank. In order to disconnect the lateral cantilever arms and the concrete slab between the two hollow boxes, the company used one of their 40-ton excavators with a KEMROC cutter wheel attachment.

PPP Project “A3 Steigerwald Autobahn“

TRENCHING IN SANDSTONE
Fast and accurate using a KEMROC chain cutter

While upgrading the A3 Autobahn in northern Bavaria, the Steigerwald Süd service area was to be increased in size which involved extensive trenching work. Civil engineers, EIFFAGE Infra Bau SE and JOHANN BUNTE Bauunternehmung GmbH & Co KG rented a 42-ton excavator with a KEMROC EK 150 chain cutter attachment to carry out the work. Even at depths down to nine meters, the chain cutter worked its way through the compact sandstone with precision to the nearest centimetre. Despite working in such difficult geological conditions, consumable costs were kept within reasonable limits.

KEMROC KSI injection attachment

Effective diaphragm wall for a retention basin
Cost effective solution using a standard excavator

Possibly the largest retention basin in Austria is currently being built in Triestingtal (Lower Austria). Engineers at PORR were given the task of installing a diaphragm wall along the centre line of the dam during the construction phase. For this project it was decided to try a KSI injection attachment from the German manufacturer KEMROC. This modified excavator trenching tool digs into the ground, mixes the soil and injects a cement suspension into it. After hardening, what is left is a pressure resistant, impermeable soil cement structure closely connected to the adjacent rock.

Dismantling and Rebuilding Wind Turbines

EURECUM recycles rotor blades
Material Handler Cat MH3024 with a KEMROC KDS 50
Diamond Saw

In the years ahead, thousands of German wind turbines will need to be dismantled and many will be replaced with newer, better wind turbines. Recycling specialists EURECUM have developed a well proven process for pre- and post-shredding of rotor blades. The residual material can be reused at a high recycling level or it can be used as a fuel.

Contractor BUNTE renovates flow control structures on the river Main

Renovation work in Viereth
Using an exacavator with a drum cutter attachment from Kemroc

The flow control barrage at the village of Viereth am Main (Germany) went through major renovation work. The pillars to the side of the weir had to be modified to suit the design of the new weir gates. Specialist contractors JOHANN BUNTE Bauunternehmung Gmbh & Co. KG used a KEMROC KR 120 drum cutter attachment mounted on a 35-ton excavator to carry out the work. This combination provided maximum performance and precision while minimising viaration the cloud damage the historical structure constructed from plain, unreinforced concrete.
